Note: We feel this coffee being close to Naturally processed IJEN LESTARI, 4th Place, Cup of Excellence unique coffee from Indonesia. Difference that we see, Sidama Introduces slightly more bitterness, as slightly as it's hard to recognize not doing direct competition. This makes it closer to IBUN ITA, Indonesia, 2nd Place.
About the farm:
Bekele Belachew is the owner of 6 hectares of coffee in the Sagara village in the Bensa district of Sidama in Ethiopia. They have kept traditions of growing, picking, and processing coffee for many years. This saves an incredible and sustainable taste of the coffee from their family farm. All of Bekele’s coffee is picked by himself and his family and then processed and dried at their family home. Like many small producers in Ethiopia, Bekele is still producing only natural coffee since that is the tradition, and they don’t have access to a pulping machine. With the changes to export laws in Ethiopia and the help of the Falcon team in Addis, we’re now able to touch incredible coffee from small farmers like Bekele.
A couple of words about varieties:
Selected for their resilience and strength, the heirloom varieties 74110 and 74112 were developed in the 1970's at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center. With roots in the rich soil of the Metu-Bishari forest, these varieties were cataloged in 1974 and released in 1979 for their ability to thrive in their native climate and resist the coffee berry disease. Standing tall and proud, the 74110 and 74112 trees are compact and full of life, producing cherries and beans of exceptional quality. These varieties are a testament to the enduring spirit of the land and its people.
The bag: The Film used in the bags is earth-friendly. It is made mostly from renewable wood pulp. The wood pulp portion is biodegradable. It takes just 84 days to get a healthy compost in a backyard, home composting environment. The remaining material (Polyethylene (PE)) is designed to make it disintegrate significantly faster than standard plastic.
